The IELTS Indicator is an online test that can be taken from the comfort of your home. This is a temporarily available alternative to the IELTS tests. This online test has been designed to prevent students and universities from being affected by the academic repercussions of the COVID-19 situation. The IELTS Indicator test is held once every week and the test fee is $149 USD.
The aim of this initiative is to remove obstacles that keep you from achieving your educational goals. Please note that according to the official IELTS Indicator website, “IELTS Indicator is an Academic test only and has not been developed for immigration purposes.”
Like the name suggests, IELTS Indicator only provides an indicative score and is not accepted by all the universities and organisations that accept IELTS test scores.

- The IELTS Indicator is an online test that checks your proficiency in the English language. You may be required to submit scores from the test as part of your application process to study an English taught master’s program in a foreign country.
- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are the four main skills that are tested in the IELTS Indicator. You will be scored separately for each of these skills depending on your performance during the test.

What is the IELTS Indicator test format?
- For IELTS Academic, the IELTS Indicator test has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each of these sections tests your skills in the respective areas and measures your ease in using the English language for communicating your ideas with clarity and purpose.
- The Listening section is 30 minutes long and has 40 questions. The Reading section is 60 minutes long and has 40 questions. The Writing section is 60 minutes long and you will have two writing tasks. The Speaking section is 11 to 14 minutes long and involves three tasks which will take place over a video call.
- Like the IELTS exam, the IELTS Indicator test is strictly time bound and each of the four sections have suggested time limits. Ideally, you should be able to complete the Listening, Reading and Writing sections within a span of 2 hours and 45 minutes.
- The entire IELTS Indicator test has to be taken in a single sitting. This means that once you begin the test, you cannot take any breaks in between. However, the Speaking section of the test will be conducted separately after you attempt the other three sections.
Useful Tips to follow for IELTS Indicator
- You have to be 18 years old to take the test. If you are 16 or 17 at the time of the test, you will need a signed consent from your parent/guardian.
- Cross check with your university before booking for the IELTS Indicator test to make sure that they will accept your IELTS Indicator test score.
- Make sure that you are well prepared for the test and have a quiet room at home where you can take the exam without any external distractions.
- You will need a laptop or a desktop computer to take the IELTS Indicator test since the test is not designed to work on mobile phones and tablets.
- For an uninterrupted and successful attempt of the IELTS Indicator test, you need a stable and reliable internet connection that will not give-up on you.
- For the Speaking and Listening sections, you will need headphones or speakers that can be connected to your computer or laptop.
- For the Speaking test, you will need to have a microphone and a camera attached to your computer or laptop.
- You have to download the application called Zoom on the electronic device that you will be using for the test,
- You will be required to carry your identity proof or passport during the Speaking section of the IELTS Indicator test.
